FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is DTT?

ASEAN member countries have been collectively aiming for Analogue Switch-Off (ASO) in phases between 2015 and 2020. To ensure signal harmonisation, countries with inter-connected borders including Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei have agreed to a 2018 ASO target. Malaysia’s DTT project falls under the purview of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia and is monitored by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as its regulating body. It is part of the national agenda to transform the country's broadcasting industry through digitisation with the aim of improving the living standards of Malaysians as the country gears up towards a developed nation status by 2020. It is also one of the key initiatives in the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

Why migrate to DTT?

With this migration, Malaysia will be keeping pace with global technological developments and will be among the first countries in Southeast Asia to do so. The worldwide migration to digital was also driven for the purpose of freeing up valuable broadcast spectrum that can be utilised for other terrestrial telecommunications and radio services.

What are the benefits of DTT to the consumer and viewers?

DTT will assist in narrowing the digital divide, especially in more remote areas. With DTT, Malaysian viewers will experience enormous benefits such as superior audio-visual quality, more free-to-air (FTA) channels, access to an electronic programme guide (EPG), multi-language subtitles, and the ability to watch TV in HD quality with myFreeview. In the future, viewers will also have access to interactive television services including home shopping, video-on-demand, subscription and selected Internet services.

What are the benefits of DTT to industry players?

DTT will provide facilities for more content and applications to be made available to viewers. Content providers, such as local television broadcasters will also gain benefits, as they are given new opportunities to expand their outreach and business. Through DTT, MYTV offers an equitable platform that will facilitate additional revenue streams for all current and future Content Applications Service Providers (CASPs) and Applications Service Providers (ASPs).

There are two types of UHF aerials, indoor and outdoor. Indoor aerials are able to receive transmission for areas within a 25km radius from a transmitter station. However, not all areas within the radius are able to use indoor aerials due to physical hindrance such as being surrounded by large buildings, hills and issues of altitude.
